The "Ballade", composed for piano and orchestra, was performed for the first time in 1931 by Germaine Leroux with the Orchestre Colonne de Paris by Gabriel Pierné. After a vigorous Maestroso comes a light and flowing Allegro where the sextolets stretch across the entire range of the instrument. After that follows a plaintive theme which is picked up again in the Cantabile.

Several passages, sometimes lively sometimes tender and melodious, are linked by chromatic movements that are interrupted by brilliant chords. Vellones made no secret of the fact he was influenced by Ravel who he knew and admired very much.

This "Ballade" was well-received by the public and was immediately transcribed by Vellones for two pianos in order to make the soloist's task easier. This version also had great success in the concert-hall.

Performed by Geneviève Ibanez and Odette Chaynes-Decaux
