The diversity, the energy, the attitude--all still available 24 hours a day. Since 1991 the tallest building in the United Kingdom has been the 235 metres (771 ft) tall One Canada Square in Canary Wharf, London. Despite this, Shard London Bridge which is under-construction in Southwark, London is expected to reach a height of 310 metres (1,020 ft) in May 2012 and become the tallest building in the European Union. As of November 2010 there are 49 habitable buildings in the United Kingdom at least 100 metres (330 ft) tall, with 38 of these in London alone, and only one outside of England (taking into consideration all under-construction and approved buildings, this figure is set to more than double to 111). The United Kingdom hasn't historically been noted for its abundance of skyscrapers, with the taller structures throughout the country tending to be cathedrals and church spires. Over recent years there has been a boom in the number of proposed and approved for construction skyscrapers in the United Kingdom, particularly in London. As of November 2010 there are four skyscrapers under-construction in the capital that exceed a height of 200 metres (660 ft) which will match the four already in existence.

  • i can't wait to see the beauty of Shard, is it the tallest skyscraper in Europe right? And, i like Pinnacle too, it has brilliant architecture, also the Gherkin really shows how 21st century modern building look like, fantastic cladding.

  • @07860583872 Yes, the Shard will be tallest skyscraper in the EU when completed. Thanks for your comment.

  • London is the greatest city in the world

  • @5505miller $120 billion? What have you been smoking? The US defecit is about $14.2 trillion. Yeah, it's beyond all disrepair.

  • @Quatermain98526 Except America's budget deficit is over $120 billion and has a debt of over $2 trillion. The best think the UK ever did was to not join the Euro wise our economy would be in a dire state, but thanks to labor's stupid spending we still have an awful deficit (which is resealable) and a debt which will take a generation to pay back. The difference is, America is past the point of repair where as Britain is no where near that point but has cost a generation its life.

  • @Quatermain98526

"Too bad the British economy is sinking faster than the American one. All in all the west is in decline right now and the east is on the rise."

The eurozone and US economy are the key determinants of instability in the global financial system. The US is dragging europe down with it in a desperate bid to survive. The prospects for the US economy are definitively dire. Though there are concerns with the UK economy, they are simply not as pervasive or systemic as in the US.

  • @Quatermain98526 Skyscrapers aren't everything. It doesn't take much for far less important cities to throw up ugly and identity-less tall buildings. Europe has many historical buildings that have to be preserved so there isn't a lot of room for them. Also, the British economy isn't sinking at all it is out of recession just like the US. Have a look at your nation's national debt if you're wanting to compare this kind of thing...!

  • @JCrownwell Too bad the British economy is sinking faster than the American one. All in all the west is in decline right now and the east is on the rise.

  • @Quatermain98526 Well it's not horse shit. So this conversation wont go any further clearly because you have tunnel vision

  • Despite being handicapped by over a decade of neosocialism, London now looks set to surpass every other alpha city on this planet in terms of culture and prestige. The global financial system will inevitably fail at some point, and London will be in a prize position to exploit the vast geopolitical changes that will hallmark the next century.

NYC did well to get up off its feet post 9-11, but is now sinking rapidly into irrelevance as the US economy tanks in real time. Its time is over.

  • @Quatermain98526 It really isn't.

  • @H4mlyn Strict regulations, what horse shit. Let the economy boom, let sky scrapers reign.
