big thanks to little-scale for inspiration and such, a quick descrition below is basically 100% credited to little-scale.
his blog can be found at: http://little-scale.blogspot.com/2009/04/how-to-use-arduino-to-generate-glitc...
--------------------------------------------------
this can be done on a mac and PC
--------------------------------------------------
HOW TO:

what you need:
-arduino
-cables
-wire cutter/stripper
-monitor with vga input
-computer with vga output
-audio jack (3.5mm prefered)

ok 1st take your monitor and connect pins 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 to the computer with the wire, a diagram can be found at the little-scale URL above.

connect the wire going to pin 5 of both the computer and monitor and also attach it to arduino's ground pin

next take pins 1, 2, and 3 from the monitor and connect them to the arduino's digital pins 2, 3, and 4.

next take your audio jack and connect the signal wire to the arduino's analog pin 0 (zero), and the ground to arduino's ground pin.

next get your arduino set up, there are easy instructions on their website ( http://arduino.cc/en/Guide/Windows )

program the arduino with either one of these codes (below) and be amazed!! Be sure the power cords for each the monitor and the computer are grounded properly. Be sure to check out Little-scale's origional creations!

Here is a link for the codes since i ran out of room to put it: http://files.filefront.com/HOW+TO+VGA+MONITORtxt/;13777610;/fileinfo.html

The first code responds to music being played from the audiojack, you can use your iPod or anything really. The 2nd is just a nice ambient image generator. If you want more codes just ask!
