El Hierro is the smallest of the Canary Islands (a chain of Spanish islands off the coast of Africa), and it is incredibly beautiful. Previously its mainly been known as a chic and exotic European tourist mainstay. Now, it's becoming famous for something a bit more virtuous as part of the eco crazy revolution----it is the world's first island to run on 100% renewable energy. This small island is basically a blueprint for a sustainable future on planet earth. We will travel to the island and get a look at el Hierro's design, something that may just end up saving the world.
Sounds nice, right? This project was carried out without the Canarian European and Spanish universities. Has excluded environmental groups and citizens. Severely affects two protected natural areas and three figures of the Natura 2000 Network (EU). It will not create energy self-sufficiency because it will operate a 13 MW diesel power plant. In short: this is a deception to justify an investment of millions with EU money, favoring local companies on an island with 80% of its land protected.

What a beautiful island. Why call it El Hierro? Doesn't it mean Iron? Iron can get rusty, I hope this island stay pristine.

The efforts shown in the video could actually sustain a petrol based society for some time but surely not forever: almost all devices we use today have a direct relation to an oil dependent technology. To end our dependence from oil and other fossil fuels we have to go quite a bit further, we must invent new completely fossil fuel-free technologies. This process will take a long time. The question is if there is enough time left to transform our civilization to a eco-technological culture.

there should be an alternative method when the sun doesn't come out. if it rains for several days straight, you'll need to shower

Nice, I had no idea Hierro had a project of such experimental proportions. Too bad Fuerteventura is way bigger with more population and no green or water to be seen. They should extend the experiment there or to Lanzarote
