Dersu Uzala (Russian: Дерсу Узала, Japanese: デルス·ウザーラ; alternate U.S. title: Dersu Uzala: The Hunter) is a 1975 joint Soviet-Japanese film production directed by Akira Kurosawa. The film won the Grand Prix at the Moscow Film Festival and the 1975 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. The film is based on the 1923 memoir Dersu Uzala by Russian explorer Vladimir Arsenyev, about his exploration of the Sikhote-Alin region of Siberia over the course of multiple expeditions in the early 20th century.

The film is almost entirely shot outdoors in the ruggedly beautiful Siberian wilderness. As with most of Kurosawa's work, each frame is carefully composed to form a dramatic picture. The film explores the theme of a native of the forests who is fully integrated into his environment, leading a style of life that will inevitably be destroyed by the advance of civilization. It is also about the growth of respect and deep friendship between two men of profoundly different backgrounds, and about the difficulty of coping with the loss of strength and ability that comes with old age.

The film sold 20.4 million tickets in the Soviet Union and made $1.2 million in the US and Canada.

We should spit upon that rotten attitude of West concerning to our culture. There are enough nations around the Globe grateful to the USSR or Russia.

  • And the original "Dersu Uzala" was released in 1961(Directed by Агаси Бабаян). Kurosawa's 1975 version is, of course, brilliant. Not to mention our government got him out of depression by offering him a chance to give a wonderful story about friendship an international recognition. Everybody got what they deserved. Make sure you check out the original 1961 Soviet film! Worth watching!

  • Noyabr November - I hope the awful rule you speak of is crumbling. It was based on ignorance, fear, and all that bred by the military-industrial complex... to keep themselves employed and the defense funding flowing in. I'm a Westerner and thoroughly disgusted by it. The world is becoming smaller all the time, and all one has to do is turn a globe and look at it from the top down, instead of side-to-side, to see how very close we are to one another. We must respect and look for the best. :-)

  • This right here is an exception to the awful rule west always obeyed: "Never recognise the useful, good things Soviet Union does." "Dersu Uzala" and the flight of Юрий Гагарин (The first man in space) were among a few other things west and NATO recognised as a great contribution we Russians made as a part of a mankind. Other than that you always maintained that "Russians are barbarians" talk you love so much, while the country with stars and straps on it's flag is ruled by barbarians.

  • I watched this today and i never tought i was positively supprised.

  • outro filme excelente....

ver só uma vez é impossivel!

  • @the0th original question was about Dersu Uzala's nationality - means character's, not actor's

  • @generalvansickle
