During filming, if a powerpoint slide is just a reiteration of what the speaker is saying, without any new information, I do not cut to it. If you are screaming, "What the fuck is on the projector!"... This is the answer.

All Skepticon videos will be monetized this year with ads. 100% of the proceeds with be used to purchase micro-loans through Kiva.org.

I know the ads are annoying, but there is no reason to not use the money for a good cause.

Also it's really a bit of a mis-statement to say that Vulcans suppress emotion. Really they suppress passion. They value things like ethics and knowledge which are essentially emotional preferences. What it really means is they just don't lose their temper or cry or laugh. Because if they did, they'd be overwhelmed and completely lose it. A Vulcan is like a tornado in a bottle.

In a segment of his Album "Inside Star Trek" Released in 1976, Gene Roddenberry explained that Spock's birth required massive outside intervention to maintain the fetus' viability. Spock's birth was a triumph of Vulcan Bio-science and a testimony to the principles espoused under the IDIC rubric.

Many things are possible in fiction while not possible in the real world - in a 2000 year old story a guy is supposed to be born by a virgin and walk on water and rise from the grave after three days etc - all things are possible in a story that is made up.

A rational speaker would have structured the talk more logically.

Remember: Spock was only half-Vulcan. His occasional displays of emotion are his human side breaking through.

How a human managed to breed with green-blooded aliens is still unknown. I guess nature found a way...

System 2 is slow and very energy consuming in humans. System 1 thinking works well for people who have previouly sharpened their intuitions in a particular field of expertise by years of practice with system 2 thinking. It fails miserably without prior experience, as the speaker also said.

It seems like the challenge in thinking rationally is striking the right balance between system 1 and system 2 thinking. Since system 1 gets activated first, perhaps "rational education" is the training of system 1 to recognize patterns in which it needs to defer to system 2.

Also, Sam Harris is a terrible pubic speaker imho.

(I still like listening to him for the content.)

I admit, it's hard to concentrate on a talk while also staring directly into the sun.
