After it does a consecutive bite and "takes the bait", I yank it up and you have to keep reeling. Tautogs tend to go underneath rocks after they eat the bait so you can not give them the chance to do that. If the fish does go underneath the rock, it's a hassle to undo the line and make the jig again. I have been blackfishing for about 4 years now.

@tasmania105 We used green crabs, cutting off the legs and cutting the whole thing in half, on the larger ones. tiny ones were used whole.

@joeyferreira100 I use a "Cape Fear" 3/4 - 3 oz. 14 - 30 lb Heavy 7' fast action rod. Its an octagon shaped rod.
are there no limit to how many you can catch?

Yes you were allowed 8 fish per man to take home back then and 14" size limit. I'm not sure what they are these days.

The boat was the"MissLynn" Out of the Shark river in NJ.

@tumadoireacht I think they are one of the better eating fish out there. Good solid meat, nice and white.
