The Australian and Queensland governments have invested more than $206 million dollars in research into so-called "clean coal" technology at the Callide Oxyfuel Plant at Biloela, near Gladstone. Whilst many view this risky investment of public money as an attempt to prop up the revenue provided by the coal industry to the Queensland government, climate campaigners stress that the technology will neither be commercially viable nor technologically efficient to prevent the climate crisis. Similar levels of investment into renewable energies, like solar or wind, would be a less costly and risky way of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
