Workin' At The Car Wash Blues

Lyrics/Music: Jim Croce

Well, I had just got out from the county prison
Doin' ninety days for non-support
Tried to find me an executive position
But no matter how smooth I talked
He wouldn't listen to the fact that I was a genius
The man says, we got all that we can use
Now I got them steadily depressin', low down mind messin'
Workin' at the car wash blues

Well, I should be sittin' in an air conditioned office in a swivel chair
Talkin' some trash to the secretary
Sayin', "Hey, now mama, come on over here"
Instead, I'm stuck here rubbin' these fenders with a rag
And walkin' home in soggy old shoes
With them steadily depressin', low down mind messin'
Workin' at the car wash blues

You know a man of my ability
He should be smokin' on a big cigar
But till I get myself straight I guess I'll just have to wait
In my rubber suit a-rubbin' these cars

Well, all I can do is a shake my head
And you might not believe that it's true
For workin' at this end of Niagara Falls
Is an undiscovered Howard Hughes
So baby, don't expect to see me
With no double martini in any high-brow society news
Cause I got them steadily depressin', low down mind messin'
Workin' at the car wash blues

Yeah I got them steadily depressin', low down mind messin'
Workin' at the car wash blues

  • I've got guitar picks the same color as my carpet and as i get older it gets harder to find them when they inevitably fall. I need new carpet because picks are more crucial than carpet.

  • Jim Croce with his friend Maury muehleisen made music that no other two men could make, with the excellent acoustic guitars, Jims voice and maurys harmony they left us a wealth of musical gold! September 20, 1973 its truly the day the music died in natchitoches la! They will always be my favorites! God bless their families!

  • Thanks jimmy :}

  • I sent this song to my Boss!!! He didn`t get it....

  • r.i.p. maury and jim

  • jim croce and his friend maury muehleisen...as seen in this video were both killed in the plane crash on sept.30 1973

  • Good memories from winston-Salem, Reynolda Gardens..kay&donnie;-)

  • @earl77 I agree! We miss him, too! wish he was here today. Oh well...

  • Jim was the coolest guy around. He really seemed to have fun onstage. Wish I could have seen him live but I was born five years after he died. Great mix of fun and sentimental songs.

  • This is the first video I've seen where Maury actually gets into his singing! He's usually very wooden but here he smiles and gets down a bit. A truly great partnership that ended much to soon.
