Excellent pushup variation incorporating balance, body control, and scapular strength. We like PowerBlock or hex-syle dumbbells, since they're much more stable than conventional round dumbbells. Note: another varation on this theme is to perform one row (instead of two) between each pushup.

wouldn't it just be easier to hit a couple reps of push ups and couple reps of lifting instead of doing a push up and stop to lift the dumb bell?

It would be, you're having to form a tripod each time you lift your arm. Feet close together may actually not be possible with added weights, not without really damaging your shoulder.
