  • Suzuki Roshi says: You may criticize him because he drinks alcohol like I drink water, but that is a minor problem. He trusts you completely. He knows that if he is always supporting you in a true sense you will not criticize him, whatever he does. And he doesn't mind whatever you say. That is not the point, you know. This kind of big spirit, without clinging to some special religion or form of practice, is necessary for human beings.[36]

  • The Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche said, "As taught in the Buddhist scriptures, there are nine qualities of a perfect master of buddhadharma. The eleventh Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche possessed all nine of these." [35]

  • He was a profoundly gentle and straightforward individual. His teachings are relevant to those who study Buddhism, and to those who do not. He set up a university and sanga's all over North America and Europe, in other words he busted his rump attempting to offer a practice that would alleviate the suffering of other beings. To me the drinking is a minor detail amongst how many individuals he has deeply touched and inspired to see their own and other's basic goodness.

  • How does anyone really know why he drank? Pema Chodron didn't know. His wife didn't. Noone knew, and he didnt explain himself. There is the possibility that it was selfish, and he was a charlatan, or that he did it for long ranging reasons.. such as the fact that we are STILL talking about him today, and his close students, many now teachers, are forced to examine this question every day.

I don't know anyone's mind.. my own, yours or Trungpa's. Look at his whole life. He was a Teacher.

  • @TheFragmentedSoul sounds reasonable to me.

i believe the enlightenment people saw in Trungpa was more an intellectualised idea rather than a true and genuine case with a practical value.

  • @CT2507 >>>I agree, with true enlightenment, there no longer exists the DESIRE to harm one's body through alcohol abuse. There is a new awareness of how fragile good health is and the greatest high really is to feel well and vibrantly alive. The obsession/ compulsion of destructive habits actually reflects an inner belief system that screams "I'm not worthy ! " When we learn to change that inner belief system to one that instead says "I respect myself completely",our behaviours naturally follow.

  • PIN, thanks for posting this....

  • @JoshRom What a great insight, thank you for proving them right, if I had any doubts or anyone coming here you give the right push as to other options.

  • LOL bunch of fucking hypocrites. The only secret you need to know to be a good buddhist is this: be boring--That's it.

  • @longde so u are saying that Karmapa also approved of his drinking?! :))

i dont think so. but if that is true, then there is something wrong with the karmapa also!

  • at least u admit that he indeed did hurt his health! and u realy think that one who damages his health can be of real help to others?

    u are just a hipocrite. :)

i have worked with and taken care of people who had damaged their minds and bodies throuhg the abuse of alcohol. i know what i talk about when i say it is extremely damaging. those sory souls are reduced to mindless animals just waiting to die in a nursing home. there is nothing spiritual about that. its just a waste and sad.

  • @longde haha... everything he did he did for his students!!... what about drinking. did he do that for his students too?!

dont make him sound so altruistic. he was a sorry victim of drinking. something he didnt have control over.

actualy he was "doing" the drinking... the drinking was "doing" him.

he did plenty of harm to tibetan budhism everywhere.. there are other lamas who turn to drinking cause of him, and their students as well. because they think its ok and without consequences.
