I know this comment is 8 months old, but I just saw it now. I'm almost 100% sure that Claudio never had throat surgery. He just has acid reflux which prevents him from hitting his upper register effectively sometimes.
You're thinking of M. Shadows from Avenged Sevenfold. They did tour with Coheed a while a while ago, though.
