Its called tacrtics, if they know they wound not win an open field battle, why then fight one? Sounds rather stupid to me.
Wars have been won by a minor forces agenst a superior force, even in modern time. During the Finnish Winter War 1939-1940, 19 infantry divisions (ca450 000 men) and 7 tank brigades (ca2000 tanks)+additional artillery (ca2000 pices) and airforce (1000 planes), was helt off by ca300 000 Finns, poorly equiped. The Finns had ca100 planed and almost no tanks. sry for bad english
