Thats an oboe for you; to make it sound more like a lovely duck and less like a dying duck, my best advise is to control your embouchure and air flow.... if you are blowing too forcefully through the reed, it increases the vibrations and makes it squaky. take the reed only & try different wind speeds and pressures, gives you an idea of how the sound changes, then add the instrument, choose 1 note to play, try the same technique with your air, and this should make you more aware. Good luck!

My best advice to you is that you should look into getting a really good private lesson teacher who is great at oboe, teaches it well, and makes their own handmade reeds. Commercial reeds just won't do it past middle school.
If you decide to buy your own oboe or english horn, include your lesson teacher or band director in the process.
Good luck!

You'll gradually learn how to control your lips... Don't push yourself :)

this was the first time she ever saw an oboe in person, If you listen closely, in either this video or the next one, I explain how to play a b, a, and c. she picked it up really quickly.
