I think it might be more applicable like say, In joints to prevent hyperextension or something.

Like ever caught a ball and hyperextended your finger?

Or in sports accidents, to help prevent your body from just flailing out of control.

although this doesnt work with intusions ie knifes bullets etc the this is a brilliant material. it does seem to already excist in flour and water but seems to have been modified to take a greater force. i seem to remember it is considered a non newtonian dilute solid.

i'd like to see some really crude experiments with this material, not just the usual hammer or shovel pussy hits. more like "lets try shooting it with an ak-47, cutting it with a katana" and the hits with nothing less heavy than a 50 lb. hammer.

oh and explosives!

Other than the slight elastic quality of d3o in this instance, a dilatant material wouldn't really offer greater protection than a hard hat.

The beanie is of course a bad example but a knee pad that is flexible and allows full freedom of movement, yet acts as a tough, rigid shell when under significant shear forces, has clear advantages over traditional body armour.

It spreads the force like a normal helmet, but springs back so you won't have to replace it. It's also flexible so it fits better.
