High Quality: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKL73deqDpo&fmt=18

This started out as a test of my new Canon ZR850 video camera, but then turned into an encoding nightmare for YouTube. You must watch the High Quality version to see decent video. The standard version is just plain awful.

The source video is unedited DV video from the Canon ZR850 which was shot outside in overcast conditions. I did no color correction or anything like I normally do. It was exported in Adobe Premiere as a Quicktime MOV with the settings of H.264 and 640 by 480.

Even with the High Quality version, you can see the limitations of compressing for flash video. Also, the fact that I picked green bushes on a windy day, does not help in encoding and compression.

  • good god! the HQ Version is soooo brilliant O_O

  • I never uploaded an HQ version. This is just YouTube uping it to a HQ format. My knowledge of video encoding has improved greatly since 2008 and thus so has the quality of video I've uploaded. That's why there's test video.

  • The camera is really loud

  • While you can hear the camera in most of the video I shoot (especially if you know what to listen for), this is not a good piece of video to judge the volume of the camera. It was a windy day with every kind of insect buzzing around and vehicle rushing up and down the road.

However, if you are looking for a good entry level camera with good mic that doesn't pick up the camera, this isn't it. I got it because it was cheap and knew I'd replace most of the audio anyway.

  • There is no difference on the quality between either video.

  • Wow... I was thinking about maybe buying the Canon ZR850, but now I'm rethinking it................ I dunno though... I'm looking for a pretty good quality camera that takes still photos, and good quality video for under $300... Could anyone suggest anything?

  • No, it shoots natively in 16:9 with a 16:9 CCD sensor. However, in photo mode, it crops the 16:9 to 4:3. I recommend never ever taking a photo with it; they just don't look good. Though, I've used them as reference points for video.

  • Correct me if im wrong, But i belive the 850 just takes out the top and bottom of the 4;3 frame?

  • yes Hd 16:9 linving in conato
