Takashi Murakami, artist and designer, founder of Kaikai-kiki:
"I have a long relationship with design, a good example is my collaboration with Louis Vuitton. However this is the first time Ive made a public presentation at a design fair and Design Miami is a very good place to present my pieces but for me the background is the same. In the Western world there is a clear division between Art and Design but in Japan they are the same, it's part of Japanese philosophy."

@lcabosa I was about to explain to you that Murakami does that all intentionally, to make a point, but I don't think you'd care.

@tordre1 Thank you for clarifying this. It was very helpful. Our western culture loves to label and categorize all aspects of life.

the world goes BAD hem we start to call to every now and them new trend art, this is childish at best, doing stuff to entertain pre-adolescent minds, in the near future we would be doing ART for the fetos.

I think your paraphrasing of his statement is a bit misleading. Murakami is saying, basically that in Japan art and design are traditionally part of the same realm--but he is not saying it is part of 'Japanese philosophy' (which doesn't really make sense). He is making a connection to his own philosophy of the 'Superflat,' which describes his attitude toward Japanese culture. He himself has written an essay on this so-called philosophy (Superflat, by Murakami, published 2000, Madra Pub Co.)
