Ernie Haase & Signature Sound tried to do it, or overdo and butcher it, in my opinion! The Dove Brothers did it! But, NO ONE, no one ever did it like the Sensational Statesmen Quartet from Atlanta, GA - Cat Freeman, Jake Hess, Doy Ott, Jim "Big Chief" Wetherington, and the wonderful Hovie Lister!
The Statesmen just had a knack of taking these songs from the Black church and making them their own. This one, for example, was originally made popular by Dorothy Love Coats & The Original Gospel Harmonettes.
Sadly, there is no footage of this historic concert that is repeated every year. The National Quartet Convention is the largest of its kind and will be held in Louisville, KY on 13-19 September 2009.
Note: Some of the photos in this montage have Denver Crumpler but, the group in the recording features Cat Freeman, who came back to The Statesmen after Denver's death. This was, also, after Jake's first hiatus from the group.

I grew up with the Statesmen & Blackwoods & really love their music. I also now enjoy Ernie H. & Signature Sound...but I've always been bent towards those songs you can "get on your mule, and go on down to town" as Hovie would say! I'm still hopeful to join a quartet myself, Lord willing.

These guys were the best.
