A new and exciting way to create a monotype, or monoprint, by using a variation of a standard acrylic gel skin.

Make sure to also check out our video on creating more traditional monotypes

  • it is crude and the result is an awful plastic sheet and what a lot of wasted expensive use of materials

  • @redshirtish redshirtish,

sorry you feel that way. It's a different way to paint and there are other options besides the plastic sheet... in fact, you can get some very interesting textures by using other materials (test some).

How crude this turns out might be more a matter of the artist than the technique, but we'll be the first to admit, this is not for everyone.

  • @ar4216 TYou should definitely be able to use canvas, although it would probably work best if you first gessoed or at least coated it with an acrylic medium prior to transferring the monotype. That way you will be assured of good adhesion. Hope that helps!

  • @GoldenPaints

This is very interesting. Do you know if canvas would work for the transfer instead of paper?

  • @digitalbrayer Definitely good questions. The image will pretty much acquire the same sheen as the surface it is painted on, so might be interesting to look at something like frosted glass. Obviously needs to be a material the acrylics won't adhere to. To be honest, we have not explored this, but looks like you found our next assignment! As for transferring images, see our Tech Sheet on Image Transfer at goldenpaint(dot)com, then click on Technical Info up top. Hope that helps.....thanks!

  • @fuyukodochi Sorry for the lateness in our response - somehow your message slipped through. In any case, thanks for the positive feedback and taking the time to stop by and watch!

  • Vey interesting indeed. This makes me wonder IF ITS POSSIBLE to have a surface thats not shiney when you remove the paper from the plastic with the monoprint image on.??

I also wonder if this medium ie that you painted on to the paper to "absorb" the monoprint - could be helpful as regards to transferring images from one surface to another.?

Have you people at Golden Acrylics tried that yet ??

  • You are welcome!
