A demonstration of the Verizon MiFi - the portable wireless hotspot that uses the cellular network to create a WiFi bubble around the unit for up to 5 devices to share Internet access simultaneously.

This handy little device is manufactured by Novatel and currently offered by Verizon and Sprint. MiFi is a great way to bring broadband with you on the move and share broadband with several devices. The device is either battery powered (about 4 hours of use), powered by a USB connection or the included AC charger. I have connected Mac and Windows laptops as well as iPhones and iPod Touches - everything worked great. Connection speeds vary based on the your coverage area and the demand for wireless data, but I typically get 1.1 Mbps down and about 500Kbps up. There are a couple catches that buyers should be aware of. The largest wireless data plan available is $59/mo but that only include 5GB of data transfer per month - steep overage charges apply beyond the 5GB limit. In addition, you need to sign a 2 year contract for the data plan in order to get the device at a discounted rate.

Overall, I'm very impressed by the device. 4 of 5 stars.

  • can you go change the settings of it, like the name of the wifi signal, or see the signal to the towers range, like using the local IP thing (such as 192,168,1,1 or something)

  • Yup - you can change the standard settings that you would expect to change in a wireless router - SSID, encryption, etc.

  • HOW MUCH RANGE DOES IT HAVE?

  • Depends, but it seems to be less than the average WiFi router. 50-75ft.

  • You can purchase at a Verizon store on online. Price depends on the length of the contract that you sign - about $150 with a 2 year agreement.

  • When it loaded the video you cut it? Wtf, false advertisement.

  • this guy sounds like stu from the hangover

  • so does this allow me to go on the internet on my ipod touch if i'm on a bus or something? As long as the little mifi thing is with me in my bag?

  • 2 questions: If I get a verizon mifi, will it work for an iPhone on AT&T? and also, If i want to use the mifi in a random place, do i have to take it with me to connect to it's internet?

  • That plus if you're with AT&T and you have an iPhone or Android but you're stuck on the 200 MB or 2 GB plan, this is a near-perfect fix. You just can't use it for MMS since MMS requires the use of the phones native network connection.

  • I have a Sprint branded Mifi that I'm using through Millenicom with their BYOD 50 GB plan.

I'm using it as my main internet connection. I live out in the country side. Beautiful scenery, nice fresh clean air, crappy internet choices. This is a great alternative to dialup or satellite.

  • Oops, meant to say, I hope walmart still has cheap one

  • Verizon mifiiPod touch

  • does mifi device have a place for sim card,or how does work, does connect to internet over 3g and then transmits wifi to an device like iphone, ipod touch...*?

  • You have 3G enabled. How do we know it really works?
