Why does the spider come to the man? Any wild animal I have ever held my hand out to has run away, spiders included.

I agree with all you have written.
The behavior has obviously been conserved as it is beneficial, or at the very least NOT inhibitory (sort of a neutral evolutionary trait)
but I don't think it need to have anything to do with the spider's inventing anything.
I think what the spider does is a perfectly physical phenomena of a disk being dropped down a slope which is without obstacles.
It's merely a way of looking at the phenomena. I don't think it need be interpreted as effort.

I disagree
It's not BECAUSE it's faster and energy saving that the spider does it.
IT's because on a downhill slope it's simply physically capable - in the same way a tire will naturally right itself and roll if hurled off a slope.
I don't doubt that the behavior is conserved because is doesn't harm the animal though!

It is indeed faster, it doubles the speed of the animal.
It is also active rolling. In the other videos you can see how the
spider roll on a flat plane and even a slope in upward direction.
The problem here is to find the balance, when is it efficient to use
this kind of locomotion. In case the animal is avoiding a predator, what counts
is to survive, thus every trick to speed up is used.
