Why...does he plug the lamp plug into the other plug in a 'vertical' way? As far as I know, they have always been plugged in horizontally, no?

Two things:

1) When does it take a crate the size of a refrigerator to ship a lamp?

2) In the context of today's cost of shipping, the container would be worth more than the lamp!

It didn't come from his job. He entered one of those prize sweepstakes drawings and won. So it was the numbskulls at the company that held the sweepstakes that got the dimensions wrong. BUT I guess that is creative Movie Making License for you. The large box just ads more drama to the film (for first time watchers). How MAJOR could a Major Award be if it is in a tiny box, but something in the size of a refrigerator? That gets the viewer wondering. It's just classic, I watch it every year.
