Working 1:1 - Alex Peters '11 and Kim Ferguson, psychology faculty member at Sarah Lawrence College

In Part 3 of the Working 1:1 video series, Alex Peters '11 and her don, Kim Ferguson (psychology), discuss their child development research at the Early Childhood Center and in the local community.

Alex Peters '11 studies psychology, focusing on child development in different cultural contexts. She works as a research assistant for her don, Kim Ferguson. Together they're working with teen mothers in Yonkers and fixing up the child-study lab in the Early Childhood Center in order to do focused developmental research there.

Peters has done internships at the Children's Television Workshop, working on international versions of Sesame Street; Little Airplane Productions, which produces cartoons; and Payne Whitney Hospital in White Plains, where she works directly with adolescent psychiatric patients. She's spending her junior year studying post-traumatic stress disorder among children in Jordan and South Africa.

Kim Ferguson holds a BA from Knox College and an MA and PhD from Cornell University. Her interests include cultural-ecological approaches to infant and child development; children at risk (children in poverty, HIV/AIDS orphans, children in foster care and institutionalized care); health and cognitive development; and development in African contexts. Her areas of academic specialization include infant categorization development and the influences of the task, the stimuli used, and infants' culture, language, and socioeconomic status on their performance; infant face processing in African and American contexts; and relationships between the quality of southern African orphan care contexts and child outcomes. She has taught at SLC since 2007.
