Secret Place

we know a secret place
beside a fall of water
where stickleback
shapes and shadows flick

on stepping stones
we sit and dip our toes

dip
flick

neon shift of damsel fly
and ruby blaze
attract the eye

dart
dip

a way upstream
a lake be dammed
and goldfish fat as
piglets found

what?
flick

but here
the delicate sticklebacks
remain

dip
flick

a clue to where
is in my name

  • It really is a mixed up mall shark...

  • I am tempted to ask you for the answer, Mark, but I don't want to give up so easily. Perhaps another clue?

  • Not a descendant, in the tradition perhaps. (You would need to know me as Mark, to find the answer. Or ask!) Thanks Andrew.

  • Thank you so much for sending me this delightful work. It is so visual and the intriguing last line makes me wonder whether you are a descendant of the author(s) of the Exeter book of Anglo-saxon riddles!

  • A lovely comment to receive, thank you. (The w/e has been good so far, and now off to watch the new Star Trek movie ...)

  • great place... I love the sounds and silences of this beautiful poem. wish you a wonderful weekend.
