I am a former Fisk Jubilee Singer 1953-57, under John Work lll. Continuing with no director in front ,no instruments and no sheet music.just as it was performed by our slave ancestors...passing the torch and keeping it real since 1867. I am proud to have been a part of the tradition, and you kids are mantaining the quality of superior voices and outstamding presentation.

It is good to see that the school (or students perhaps) are upholding the traditions that saved the school back since it's conception. The original Jubilee singers are the true heroes of Fisk, for if it weren't for their selflessness and the poor planning of the original director, the school would have been closed down due to lack of funding. Keep their torch shining and bring eyes back to Fisk University!

I am due to hold a presentation about Christianity, and I discovered this beautiful piece of art. Could someone tell me what coherence this has to do with Christianity, because I'd like to show it in class.
Thanks

@koreboms1993 Aaron Siegel, Manager, Secondary and Middle School Programs at the Weill Music Institute, responds, “In my reading of this song, the singers are joyfully reminding each other to be ready for their lord, but since many of the early spirituals also contained coded references to freedom from slavery, the lyrics could also be read as a call to be ready in the event of an attempted escape.”
For more info, you could contact the Fisk Jubilee Singers through their website.
