Wow I'm behind times;-) Very interesting Simon! Gotta get my kiln ready for a bisque fire, going out to the shed to keep on those cylinders, I'm trying to get a foot tall or taller with 3 lbs of clay, I have reached the 12 inches but nothing usable yet!!! I will be trying the wood ash now that I know it can be done in an electric kiln;-) Keep you posted;-)
Looking forward to seeing the results on these pieces.
I have seen dry wood ash mixed with oxide dusted on cone 6 electric pots and they came out very nice. Pinnel's weather bronze will blush a lovely toast in an electric cone 6 firing.
I've spent most of my adult life heating with wood, which involves cleaning out the stoves and fireplaces periodically. All the freaking out about wood ash baffles me. Firing with wood probably exposes one to more ash than what Simon is doing. Simon is blowing wood ash in solution, not easily inhaled, unless by accident. Hopefully he puts the ash through mesh in a ventilated place, because it would make a mess out of his workshop. Just common sense.
I mix them as it feels right, but roughly 3 rutile to 1 iron. Cone 6 should work, i fire with an digital controller to 1255 C. and soak for 15 min at top. The body i use is a buff brown s/w with manganese speckle. Hope it works, and let me know how it turns out. Jacques
What proportions of rutile and iron ox are you using? Have you tried this in a ^5/6 firing? What color range of clay body? Love the 'toasty' look of wood/reduc. firing. Thanks, Sharon
You can get a Chapin Hand 48-Ounce Light-Duty Poly Garden Sprayer #1000. They are only about $15US and work well for this. They won't clog like an airbrush and you don't have to worry with a compressor or passing out from hyperventilating. Love me some wood ash!
Yes, and when one breathe in dry wood ash and it hits the mouisture in the lungs the same thing occurs. It creeps me to watch our friend, Simon, doing this.
Wow, you are really enjoying yourself! I envy you up there in the woods with the creek behind you and you can get to see the leaves change. Can't wait to see the kiln fired.
I'm an asthmatic. I've used spray bottles but they clog to much.
I half expected to see some strange bird come down and make love to you or somthing! HAHA Or maybe you're just scaring off the bears. Do want to see the results! Best of luck with the firing, thanks so much Simon, we've about seen it all with you, your great!!!
The ones I see there are for ^10-? I was thinking of the acid nature of the ash itself, whether alone or with other ingredients. I know combustibles corrode the elec. elements, but this is pre-combusted... Maybe the only way to know is to try, and fire inside a saggar? Anyway, would likely be matt if used alone at ^6. Can you post URL to recipe at that cone? Thanks!

I find that a spray of rutile and red iron ox also gives a nice toasty look in oxidation cone 7

wood ash ,,,,,nice old school stuff...
jmg1957 2 years ago
silly question, but, wouldn't it be easier to use an airbrush for that?
Sorka42 2 years ago
Maybe I'm mistaken, but doesn't wood ash and water basically make lye or caustic soda?
