HDTVNEWS REVIEW:Nicole KIDMAN outstanding performance in the Golden Compass is so smart! There is plenty of fantasy in this $180 million family film. New Line (studio) has delivered a fabulous tale, an adventure movie which gets you to travel in wonderful winter snowy landscapes, white mountains wonders ... with machines Jules Verne wouldn't have dreamt of , in his most wonderful dreams... You get tranported into a world that may remind you one among the best Jules Verne stories (book : "20 000 lieux sous les mers" ) except the Golden Compass is all above sea level (unlike Jules Verne unforgettable world under the sea!)...Based on a story (book) of Philip PULLMAN 's "his Dark Materials" trilogy, the cinematography is classic and a real wonder, the acting is great and mostly, and above all, Nicole KIDMAN's performance is outstanding, so much we would expect her to stand in an Oscars nomination for this marvelous role. A real challenge as she managed to made us quite have good feelings and emotions for a character which is supposed to be in fact - or sounds like is- a "villain" (as the really unforgettable Mrs Coulter) ... [ which turn out - thanks to Nicole Kidman- to become even lovable as getting touched by the litlte girl with special supra-natural ability to sort out complex situations and people in danger !!! coupled with a magic Golden Compass in Hand ...] ... Even a white bear becomes so friendly... he had been in trouble and get sorted out by Lyra...thanks to her intelligence and great talent ( the bear had lost his supernatural armor, i.e. to say his extraordinary power and ability to win ). Lyra seems to find the solution to any problem and find a way out of any impossible situation ! a Great Film Thanks to great stars, amazing effects and use of Technology, and an endlessly amazing Nicole Kidman at her best ! - Thanks for this movie... A Disney-style movie with a very modern touch ... with "daemons" ... Though A DAEMON IS NOT AN ANIMAL NOR A PET, not even "a pet for the soul", "as if they are representing their souls". The film clearly mentions that Your "daemon" IS your soul. In Lyra's world, your soul is outside your body, physical, in the shape of an animal that represents your personality best. and DAEMONS ARE NOT PETS...
TRUTH versus LIES. The story carries us to a creative world where the metaphor of our own thoughts (and emotions ) is coming out of their world of silence and world of the untold, to take form as "animals" though nothing to do with real animals... as your soul, these "animals" accompany each human... as does your soul !... The daemon is specific for each man, woman and child in the movie, ( feelings and emotions, thoughts are shaped as daemons, for the time of a film ! But how great is the Film ! The souls as humans are in interactions , so are the "daemons" (animals) , and interfere between each other and with their respective humans}. A great work of fantasy (story) ! ... Though still a Myth... But the magic abilities of Lyra added to the magic golden Compass brings hope into anyone's world as no film really do... in such a specific way , only Kidman knows how to make it so...
The extremely well-made digital effects demonstrate an outstanding mastership of the new technologies by the Film Director...
-( most of the time, in films, we are so disappointed by the fact that the digital effects are not really fully controlled, as to serve the whole film and are part of the story making as is the script, the acting and the decor, as all that makes a film what it is at the end... - sadly most of the time these new digital effects seem not to be controlled by whoever use them- ... Unlike in this film, the digital effect here get to be forgotten as such.
But most of all, the film remain, and that is thanks to Nicole Kidman , an amazingly beautiful performance! It to be remembered as a classic film, in the style of the Wizard of Oz (with the same type of flying witches!!!) and a Disney-style-crafted blockbuster (though not a disney film), with some fantastic discoveries in the style of the non-ordinary car in "chitty bang bang", or like the flying machines in around the world in 80 days", embodied with the enthousiasm that is fuelled by the discovery-led scientific spirit, unruly, inquisitive, and the apology of the free mind, free will, personality !
The gothic aspect of the film is not that too extreme, as in most recent films are not as good as Golden compass. The film manage to remain a traditional classic (without the weird effects of truly gothic films)... the style remains close to the one found in the brothers Grimm (in some ways), but not as "gothic" as [ though also a very good film]. But the Golden Compass is by the way even more enjoyable ! as is the visual aspect, the photography featuring endless white landscapes etc... is a real wonder, uplifting and very inspirational...and the overall film is beautiful, splendid.
