This might be a new feature of the 1.1.0 version, but creepers are NOT silent. Yes, they have no idle noises like the zombie's grunts or spiders' sounds, but their footsteps, even on stone, are audible.

I have experienced this firsthand, hearing a cacophony of footsteps in a cave, but no other sounds. Sure enough, I drop down, and four creepers and nothing else. I kill them, the footsteps stop.
