March 2007
Billions of dollars of Iraqi revenue is lost every year through oil smuggling across the country's porous borders. There are fears this money is being used to fund the insurgency.
The Iraqi coastguard is responsible for patrolling the Shatt al Arab waterway and hunting down the smugglers wrecking Iraq's economy. "Smugglers sail into Iranian waters and we can't do anything about it", complains coastguard commander, General Hakim Jassem. "There would be a confrontation with the Iranians".

  • loads of countries have backed out of the offers they gave per barrel, no one wants to go there, who can blame them, we ripped their country apart and it was the west who helped to put saddam into power in the first place.

  • The Iraq either has to be split up or needs a stong hand which holds down the violent forces.

Saddam opressed the people but keept iraq together and safer than it is now.

  • these are lies.

  • Better that oil is "smuggled" for insurgency then stolen by Us and GB. It is insurgency oil. Unfortunately tough..this story is not true. Oil is smuggled for personal benefits and for funding clandestin Cia operations in Iran and Lebanon

  • how old is this please ?

  • where are the ppl that say USA smuggle our oil ? its we iraqis do that !! our great government lol
