Former CEO of Superior Renewable Energy John Calaway talks about the impact of offshore wind farms on migrating bird species during a luncheon on South Padre Island Sept. 6, 2006. (Ryan Henry / Island Breeze)
I call on everyone who embraces the promise of green energy to stop being industry apologists for the impacts & stop enabling the wind industry to shrug their responsibility by buying into their “fallacy of false choice” argument. We don’t have to naively accept bird mortality to end global warming. The problem with their argument is it’s like claiming we must amputate the leg to save the patient instead of looking for ways to save both the leg and patient. It doesn’t have to be “either/or”.
Let us be clear: the purpose of any industry is to make money. Instead of aggressively attacking legitimate concerns & deflected the argument by saying “look at how many birds cats kill” the industry should own their share of the problem. Saying we should not be concerned about tens of thousands of bird fatalities because other agents of mortality cause more death is as illogical & irresponsible as saying we should make no effort to prevent pancreatic cancer because strokes cause more deaths.
He states that wind is inexhaustible but forgot to mention that wind stops blowing as well, so it comes and goes. Therefore, it's not reliable. This is why we aren't depending on wind to sail across the ocean anymore or using windmills to pump water to cattle. As far as the birds, where did he get his stats on the 10's of millions that cats and hunters kill? He also fails to mention that the tips of the blades go up to 180 mph. I can't blame him I guess; he's just selling a product.
that CEO happens to be my dad and the Kind Rach who r the people sueing him lost to him! and they kill a million bird considering the fact that people pay to hunt on that ranch!

Hahaha. If you're going to be a plant, pick a better name that isn't so obvious and biased.

The birds argument against wind is bogus.
Like the man said, if we really cared we would ban cats.
Wind has HUGE potential. Especially if we can electrify rail, cars, etc.
Now, maybe we need to ask how TexacoChevron is able to own patents on nimh batteries? Its unamerican that they do that.

The Valdez oil spill killed a couple of birds too, I think.
