Overview:
The Inquisition (The Holy Orders of the Emperor's Inquisition) is a secret organization that exists outside the standard administrative hierarchy of the Imperium of Man. The Inquisition acts as the secret police force of the Imperium, hunting down any and all of the myriad threats to the stability of the God-Emperor's realm, from the corruption caused by Chaos, heretics, mutants and rebels, to assaults from vicious alien species like the Tyranids, Orks or Dark Eldar.

What they do is basically investigate things like reinforcements arriving before the request for them is sent due to Warp trickery.

@CrypticWatcher It's because it's hard to explain, the Deathwatch is a much better example than anything else. The simple way of putting it is that they simply serve the Ordo.

@CrypticWatcher Bad analogy, the Adeptus Mechanicus are part of the Imperium because even the Imperium knows without them they're pretty screwed. You can go as far to say that the Mechanius is independent to the Imperium of Man managing themselves and only really being allies.

The better analogy would be the Deathwatch of the Xenos. They can actual alone to take down big threats fast but they often accompany Inquisitors when doing their duties, of killing stuff.

@lololololol47 I meant to spell inquisitor, but what you say is also correct, they are the chamber militant of the ordo malleus, but I will add they are still nominally a part of the adeptus astartes.

the grey knights is to the ordo malleus as what the adeptus mechanicus is to the empire.
