Start with novice Pointman.
Hit every single block you can, not even trying to create matches.
Orange gives more points than Blue
Be sure to get all the Companion Cubes you can to the bottom row, they're worth a LOT.
Do NOT hit any Ink power-ups if you have Companion Cubes in your grid!
Be sure to get Clean Finish.
Remember that the track is randomly generated every time you start the song, so if you don't succeed the first time, keep trying, and you'll eventually get the gold.

If you must cheat...
Cheat Engine method:
Start Audiosurf and Cheat Engine.
Select process QuestViewer.exe
Press Add address manually
Choose Type=Float and press Pointer
Address of pointer=0x00DA89A0, Offset(HEX)=7C, press OK
Now edit the value to 180000 and wait until the end to get gold.

I gave up. I mean I understand GLaDOS is testing us and all, but I think this test actually is impossible. Why couldn't there be a different way of getting the potato like maybe... beat the Hole in the Ground Song, you know, a song ACTUALLY RELATED TO THE ARG, rather than just a remix of a bunch of sound clips and beats.
