personally I think the similarities between these two pieces are sketchy at best. you've synced them up well but that's a different matter. They aren't the same music.
However there is one set of pieces that Star Wars probably did borrow from, Gustav Holst's "The Planets" listen to both all the way through and it's hard not to be struck by the similarities.

The third movement of New world symphony has a part that sounds similar to Duel of Fates
-
Also, Duel of the Fates sounds like the Scherzo from the New World Symphony.

Nice job.

i think they are similar. he may have drawn inspiration from this peice. not a direct copy or anything, but they are similar. and i think john wiliams does rip off some popular themes, especially the horn line from richard strauss don juan, which he uses in et.

@Spinelessification jesus, calm down. Why is this even an issue? What is wrong with you?

Respond to this video... ...and to say that they're not similar at all and then turn around and say that maybe they're similar in"orchestration and form" is like saying "They're not similar at all, except for that they're possibly quite similar.
I'm not arguing a case that it's plagiarism, because I don't think it is. But it's kind of absurd to say that they're not similar in a lot of ways, and it's even more absurd to get so hot headed and defensive about it.

@thebiochemistry They're not completely different. They're thematically quite similar and there are a good many parts where the rhythmic movements and melodic intervals are pretty close to identical. Obviously not through the whole piece, but they are pretty close. In fact, when the first leitmotif of the Dvorak starts in, I'd say that one could easily mistake it for Star Wars.
No, they're not identical, no, they're not the same piece. But they demand close comparison.
THANK YOU!!!! i have been wanting to do a back to back comparison for a long time. I know the theme is different but the nuances of the orchestration is nearly identical. The little staccato string attacks between the melody of the theme in Star Wars is a direct steal! Both are great though and even though Williams stole it, the best composers do exactly that, they steal the parts they like and work it into the context of their own work. But Dvorak's is still better!

I am sorry, pal, but here you are very mistaken. I know both the Dvorák's 9th Symphony and the Star Wars theme very well and I'll tell you - they are completely different, the theme is totally different. If they share any similarity, it is in on the form and orchestration, only.

*I am sorry, pal, but here you are very mistaken*
Mistaken in what? Did I claim anything?

It's nothing like it in any way shape or form! Talk about ignorant. The ONLY similarity is the da da da at the beginning and that is NOT plagarism. It's the same situation as using "once upon a time" at the beginning of a new book. Also, it's interesting how you didn't accuse him of stealing the intro to Mendelssohn's "Wedding March".

*Also, it's interesting how you didn't accuse*
Accuse? Where do you read the accusation?
