These images were taken at the Goreme open-air museum in Cappadocia. It is estimated that there are more than 600rock-cut churches in Cappadocia.
You will note that many frescoes are damaged by centuries of graffiti and the deliberate disfigurement of faces dating from Islamic times.
Since no flash pictures are allowed, these images were taken using a 'night' setting.
The eyes are scratched out because of the superstitious belief of the evil eye. This belief is quite rampant amongst turks.

I get so angry every time I see frescos with their eyes scrached!!! Muslims did that in churches all over Cyprus to.
