1440 WFTQ Worcester, Mass. approx. 130 - 230 a.m., Monday, December 14, 1981 received from Philadelphia on a GE Superadio with longwire antenna (causing temporary signal overload at 00:35). The announcer on this aircheck, Mike Warshaw, mentions that I was listening at 07:00.

Photos are of the DJ board from the time period when they were located at 34 Mechanic St. Photos courtesy WFTQ fan website on Facebook and they were originally provided by Mike Warshaw.

WHIS Bluefield, WV fades in for a quick ID at 03:26. I was in WFTQ's null pattern at a distance of approx. 240 miles.

To listen to WFTQ, I used to have to wait for two stations on the same 1440 channel to sign off. Locally, WNPV in Lansdale, PA would sign-off at midnight. Then WHHH in Warren, Ohio would dominate the channel until just after 1 a.m. when they would sign-off.

On May 4, 1981, WHHH was sold and became WRRO. Shortly afterwards, WRRO began broadcasting all night five nights a week (Monday - Friday mornings) with the Larry King Show (midnight to 5 a.m). This limited my opportunities to listen to WFTQ to mostly Saturday and Sunday mornings and the occasional Monday morning test for WRRO.

Recorded on a TDK C-60 cassette and a tabletop cassette recorder.

  • @RVDMISSISSAUGAKID, yes, I was in WFTQ's null pattern at a DX of 240 miles. To listen to WFTQ, I had to wait for 2 stations to sign off. WNPV in Lansdale, PA would s/off at midnight. Then WHHH in Warren, OH would come in until just after 1 a.m. when they signed off. WHHH became WRRO on 5-4-81. Then WRRO began broadcasting all night 5 nights a week (M-F mornings) with the Larry King Show. This limited my listening to WFTQ to Sat. & Sun. mornings and the occasional Monday morning tests for WRRO.

  • one of the most frustrating things about MW DX is the way they almost always fade in and out.
