Grand Rapids Radio Icon Rick Beckett left us February 26th way too soon. Life was never easy for Rick, but in the end it was Rick who touched millions of people. May no one ever forget what a great man he was. I'm not a professional film maker nor do I play one on TV. I just decided to sit at the computer and say "thanks" to Rick in my own way.
I started in radio at WKLQ when Rick was there. I listened to Rick every weekday morning in high school and to me, he was bigger than life. Early every Saturday morning Rick would call the station (his sobriety was always debatable) and I would get a gruffy "Hey! Beckett here! Who the hell is this?!" I would tell him and it would be followed with the obligatory "Who?!...Who the hell are you?"
Regardless, he never knew it, but he was always larger than life to me, even as I followed him at GRD and WOOD. After quasi succeeding in radio, I tried to email Rick a couple of times and tell him what an influence he was on me, but I never heard back
Listening to the flood of support Rick as received and despite his demons, he really did wear the funny red cape and the big red "S" on his chest. While no doubt it was never easy being Rick, he really was Superman.
Rest Easy Brother!
I miss you King Rick!!!!!!!!! From your pal, Singingscott.

Thank you, Scott Fitzgerald, for putting this together. Very proper that Grand Rapids television icon Henry Erb reported on the death of Grand Rapids' radio icon. I still miss Rick immensely and he was a huge influence on me.

You should have finished the vid with Rick's send of with "Happy Trails" as heard on WOOD.
Otherwise, I loved it.
Thank you.

Kudos on the great tribute video! Crass and sarcastic, and we loved every minute of the time shared with Rick Beckett. Scott, my sympathy to you and Rick's family and his many friends. He was a big lug of a guy. What an original. RIP, Rick, and to that one of a kind voice and delivery that was exclusively Rick Beckett.

Rick was extremely funny, with his antagonistic "poke you in the ribs" style. He and Scott Winters worked well together under the term "opposites attract". Miss you. Dale
