Jonathan Meades travels through the Baltic states to Finland in an attempt to define northernness, and sees castles, Lith dancing, totem poles, terrestrial sputniks and crosses.
Correction on the Teutonic Knights - they weren't formed in Palestine, they were formed in Germany as the soldiers in a specifically Northern Crusade against the pagan Baltic people. Funny he should miss that - the Northern Crusade as a separate enterprise to the Mediterranean Crusade fits right in to his thesis of northern difference.
I think this is a very noble and necessary endeavour, to create a true sense of "North Sea Culture". I believe the central aspects of this culture have been greatly overlooked in comparison to the gaudy delights of Southern European culture.
I have lived for 20 years on the Mediterranean, and while the food, wine, landscape and climate have always been a delight, the much vaunted Mediterranean artistic heritage has never failed to disappoint.
@stoazen You're right - sorry for my mistake and sorry Mr Meades. I should have known not to go against him without checking my facts.

Man, he really loves his herring. He could be from the Western Isles! Great programme. I always enjoy Mr Meades and his entertainingly dry prose.
