Meet Lance the dragonmaster, final battle of the game and this challenge (though while beating Lance completes the maingame, there's still the Kanto adventure ahead).
The battle against Lance is distinct in that we can no longer tank it out. Most of Lance's Pokemon come with Hyper Beam which is an easy OHKO on just about anything in our party that isn't Steelix and Golem. Even when Hyper Beam doesn't take us out in one hand, the enemies have attacks that do. For instance, Golem and Steelix easily survive a Hyper Beam from Gyarados but they don't want to eat Hydro Pumps.
Still, offensive strategies are desirable whenever possible.
Lance opens with Gyarados, who is 4x weak to electric. Pity that we took Steelix along instead of Red Gyarados; otherwise, I'd be Thundering its ass. Without good damage dealing tools, the best we can do is stall with Tentacruel yet again. Wobbuffets don't really work because there's a chance either Hydro Pump or Hyper Beam will be used, so the Counter/Mirror Coat guessing game is too risky. Destiny Bond works, but we want both Wobbuffets later on in the battle to make an otherwise awfully tricky boss a whole lot easier.
We start by setting Attract, then Swagger. We don't care about the attack increase as a result of the latter because Hyper Beam takes out Tentacruel in a single hit anyway. Jynx also, obviously. I mean, duh. If we live the first turn, infusion has a 75% chance of keeping Gyarados from attacking us, which is very nice. We want it to hurt itself because that's the best way available of hurting Gyarados. Tentacruel can also go for flinching Surfs. Blizzard does more damage but is inaccurate and we're going to need all the PP of this move for Dragonite later.
If Tentacruel dies here (hopefully to a Hyper Beam), Jynx comes in during the recharge and uses Lovely Kiss to sleep Gyara. 75% chance of success. Then we switch back and Swagger again.
Attract is set first here and only here. Later Swagger is top priority because we're already far enough to not want to reset, and Attract loses its effect when the attract user dies. Swagger may lost a while longer.
Lv. 47 Dragonites come next. Like with the Gyarados, Tentacruel with speed training (vitamins work as does grinding w/ the box trick) outspeeds these guys, going for Swagger and hoping Tenta lives another turn to Attract and hopefully even land Blizzards. A Blizzard is 4x effective, but still only a 2HKO due to the level difference.
When Dragonite Hyper Beams Tenta, we can either attempt to sleep him with Jynx or go for the guaranteed hyper-effective Ice Punch. The latter is less risky.
Lv. 50 Dragonite is different in that he gets Outrage and loves spamming that. This firstly means it'll confuse itself in 2-3 turns while killing stuff in its way, but there's one important thing to know here: lv. 25 Wobbuffets with good IVs and sp. defence training can _barely_ survive an Outrage, then Mirror Coat the Dragonite into oblivion. I don't know the chances of this working, but as you can see it does work. Not sure if a high roll is necessary or not, and whether it's guaranteed to work. It probably wouldn't if I had a couple points less in the defensive stats.
Aerodactyl and Charizard are walled by Golem, moreso the former. Charizard 2HKOs Golem with Flamethrower normally and doesn't die to a Rock Throw in spite of his 4x weakness to rock. However, stat training enables Golem to have a chance at surviving 2 Flamethrowers, but criticals and burns screw him over. Aerodactyl is 3HKO'd by Rock Throw. As you would expect, Tentacruel is too slow to work here.
Well, that's it, the maingame is complete. I'm not done with this challenge yet as I do intend to beat the Kanto portion of the game and defeat Red.
Leaving a non-combat segment of the recording in so that you can look at my glorious lv. 24-lv. 36 team and get frightened looking at my gameplay time. The reason for such a high number is because I used the turbo button (which speeds the game up like tenfold in the case of the GBC games) a lot while farming for items or stats. I caught all three legendary dogs without really looking out for them specifically too. I'm pretty sure I'm not going to need any legendaries for Kanto either, though.
For Kanto, I'm probably going to post my fight against Red because I don't think the Kanto gyms and Rival fights will be entertaining enough for a dozen more uploads. Or maybe I'll make a looooooong video out of all the Kanto battles besides Red, I haven't made up my mind yet.

I take it this is harder than the Pidgey-only challenge? .__.

Never tried that one, but in this challenge, there's more variety in what strategies you are able to use, and the levels tend to be pretty low for most of the game. I also decided against using X items in this run (which can be abused to gain stat advantages over the opposition, enabling a sweep).
