What we do is inherently dangerous, no matter how routine it can be. At 800ft AGL (+/- a bit), the margin of safety is under two seconds. Thank goodness this SGT survived his high speed encounter with Holland DZ with almost miraculously minor injuries. The main parachute had a partial malfunction known as a "squid" and obviously offered very little lift capability. Note that the reserve parachute deploys (not fully) a split second before the jumper burns in.
