I honestly don't know anything about this hornpipe other than that it's on a bunch of recordings, including Tommy Peoples, Planxty, Joe Burke, and of course many others. I would assume the title refers to a particular tool of the tailoring trade; there is a heavy-weight thread known as "buttonhole twist" usually used for top-stitching work such as buttonholes.
