If you want to seize control of the massive natural gas deposits in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, but you can't run a pipeline through Iran or Russia (because leaders there aren't US puppets), what do you do?

Easy. You invade Afghanistan, install your puppet president, have your troops guard the pipeline route, create the extremely lucrative side business of supplying the illegal occupation, announce that the whole charade is part of "The Global War on Terror," then change the name to "Overseas Contingency Operation," just to keep things fresh for all the people who actually trust what their TV tells them.
