http://www.pbs.org/frontlineworld/stories/mexico704/ Hear from immigration expert Wayne Cornelius on how changes in border security have become a boon for human smuggling. Watch FRONTLINE/World "Crimes at the Border" on air and online beginning May 27, 2008.

In a joint project with "The New York Times," FRONTLINE/World correspondent Lowell Bergman investigates the business of human smuggling across the busy ports of entry between Mexico and the United States. In Tijuana, masses of people attempt to cross illegally every day with the help of increasingly organized and expensive smugglers. Bergman explores the region to find that this illicit but lucrative business is expanding, and U.S. border agents are subject to an increased risk of corruption. He follows the dramatic story of one such corrupt U.S. border guard, the risky business he became involved in, and what the U.S. government is doing about the problem.

  • Actually, second-generation and much of the first-generation Mexican-Americans fit into our culture fairly quickly. Plus, economists of all ideologies point out that we REALLY need the labor for our economy to run.

  • A DMZ would be VERY expensive, and there's no way Mexico could invade us...besides, much of our exports goes to Mexico, so I can't wait to hear you explain why this helps to the hundreds of thousands of Americans who just lost their jobs because your proposal went through...

  • Actually, free trade, according to socialist, Keynesian, and neoclassical economists, allows each country to specialize in what it does best while getting goods from other countries at a lower cost. It also allows for more competition, increasing quality in and lowering prices for all sorts of products. We just need to ensure workers are being treated fairly and the environment is being respected, that's all. Vote for a global minimum wage!

  • Trust me, Native Americans will not be happy if you guys see "freedom-loving undocumented" immigrants. I had a native american professor who complained about the increasing conflicts between Native and Mexican communities. I am sure that you guys will only have more conflicts with them if immigrants increased rapidly.

Probably you believed that your sacred land will be "liberated" by those freedom-loving "undocumented immigrants" one day. Go ahead. White people will not be the first victim.

  • If Americans want to stop those craps with our neighbors, we should stop those gay free-trade pacts with Latin America...

Why? If your capitals flow to one country "freely" and the regional economy of course will flow to your country "freely" with your free-trade pacts. Yeah you can stop it through cops, but the commodities in Latin America will continue to "flow" to the United States. Save America, stop the NAFTA, and all those stupid free-trade pacts.

  • ALERT: The US-MEXICO borders are very sensitive area, it should be stood by the US troops like most countries & USA must create a DMZ!!! otherwise the USA will be falling OFF to the Ocean. (be invaded)

MEXICO would become the Most Base of Terrorist-Gangs Smugglers Country in the World including Illegal Aliens-Crossing, Sneaking into the USA. (Millions# illegals inside the USA already) Time is Running Out.

MEXICO is Number 1 Crime & Terror in the USA.

  • cheengators - so, you think that PBS should be unabashedly in favor of illegal immigration? Wouldn't that be partisan too?

PBS covers stories which affect American society. It seems to me that the mass migration of MILLIONS of people across the border and the resultant effects on crime, law enforcement, social services, etc certainly qualifies as a legitimate story for PBS to cover.

  • PBS must be desperate for cash. They have been allowing partisan issues and comments creep into their programming. Now, I see it here on youtube. It's a shame they would hop on the illegal immigration bandwagon knowing the anti-illegal venom seethes from those platforms just to raise some cash.

  • InTheSticks1881:"The population explosion in the U.S. as a result has and will be very damaging to our economy and culture.

What must have the Indigenous Natives thought when they seen them palefaces land on their sacred land so long ago only to find they didn't come in peace?????

  • They are called 'illegal immigrants' for a reason. The population explosion in the U.S. as a result has and will be very damaging to our economy and culture. Isn't odd that we are more interested in protecting the boarders of other country's and not our own?
