  • Sure - got to be the environmentalists fault!

  • How is your visibility?

    Stand by (I'll look!)

    There is smoke, boss.

Fires do have that smoke effect.

Why do dumb ass even ask?

Don't you love smart firefighters that cost us a fortune and can't put out a fire.

  • Pwnage

  • blucheez, you are right, believe it or not, but fires of this magnitude have NOT been going on in California EVER.

California Indians burned the landscape regularly before white settlement, creating a mosaic of old-growth conifers, oak, wildflowers, berry patches, meadows, brakes, and balds.

The land was beautiful, productive, and incapable of producing the types of catastrophic wildfire events that have become commonplace.

The problem is fuel build-ups due to lack of human action.

  • I would also like to add that other than the drought, there was nothing natural that started this fire. This are is over-run with people, particularly on weekends. Too many humans doing too many risky things given the severity of this fire season. Official word is someone was target shooting in the Merced Canyon; rumor around town is it was a poacher after pig and deer. Saw: why no grants from Bush and Co. to clear populated "useless" lands like this that are now burning?

  • I live in Midpines, CA on CA140. Across the highway are mandatory evacuations. saw4fire is ignorant of the facts here on the ground. There is little logging to do and even less given through the misnamed "healthy forests initiative of the Bush cronies; instead, it is chapperral, dense greaswood 10-20' high, some pine and oak in very steep terrain. What IS true is that most people here don't have 200' clearance. Grants to landowners through the Bush's logging program would have been helpful.

  • There is a related problem. The environmentalists have fought any hint of logging. People can thin the forests, just as a small, cool fire might have done. You can lower the potential energy density, which is what is driving these "blow-ups" that we've seen lately. Of course, you can't do it if it's illegal. So Mother Nature takes it all, rather than being selective.

  • believe it or not, fires have been going on in california for thousands of years. When the fires don't keep going because of firefighting efforts, the forests get too dense and it threatens the oaks and other plants... not that anyone cares, but its something to think about
