"Prententious idiots?" That's anyone with an opinion. His are sexist and foreshadowingly over-reaching into PC correctness. She's a poorly-disguised smart-aleck being diplomatic, but she is no one's idiot.

  • I think Tynan was being an ass to Vivien Leigh, I think his criticisms of African Americans in film is spot on and I am glad someone had such gall to say it to a movie producer such as Samuel Goldwyn.

  • @outinsider

Tynan is imperceptive in his criticism of Leigh as Blanche, to my mind. The intention of the character is that she lives in a different reality from the rest of the characters. But he had to give her her due as Scarlett at least, since even he admits she was perfect in GWTW/

  • I love it when at 4:00 Vivien says: 'What does that mean??!!"

Wonderful, wonderful interview.... Thank you Taylormayes for posting this!

  • what does "go-away fishing" mean?? Is that what he said??

  • my goodness! having uploaded this interview has been a total win. thank you for sharing this interview. lots of jewels in here to enjoy in all kinds of respects. brilliant fun!

  • @GretaGarbo Importance to society is relative and subjective with regard to art. And I don't think Goldwyn, although one tough cookie, thought of artists in terms of being money machines per se. But he sometimes put up his own property as collateral when seeking funding for a project (talk about deserving to put your name on a project!) and he was a businessman and needed to make a profit. Even genius academics are expected to bring grant money to their universities.

  • @GretaGarbo She was unique but it was snarky of her to not fulfill her contractual obligations. She used the war as an excuse, promising to "pay up" afterwards, and I understand that Irene Selznick really went to bat on her behalf with David O. Years later, Mrs. Selznick ruefully admitted that they'd all been had and that Miss Leigh never had any intention of fulfilling the terms of her contract. It hurt Olivier's chances of film work in Hollywood as well.

  • @HotVoodooWitch I read that Vivien signed a contract of 7 years when she was cast as Scarlett, but she did no film under this contract: after GWTW she went back to England to work on stage with Olivier. And despite of liking the movies her real passion was theater. I think very few actresses had the security and no fear of producers as Vivien. She was unique.

  • @HotVoodooWitch Of course. He was not humilliating Welles as an artist, but as well as many producers, not only Goldwyn, Hollywood has been treating genious like Orson Welles amog others as a money machine. No truly artist can coop with this, as they need to show their art to the public as a way of expressing themselves and what they have in mind about something important - I mean, important to the society.

  • Lady Vivian Leigh is the only one with any kind of control, intelligence, and any comments she makes are understated, and she stays in with the same quick, lovely, controlled person in the whole thing. She is all "Lady!"

  • Ken looks very much like Tim Curry

  • (3:58) What does that mean!!! Funny

  • 1:21 when Vivien says "Ah. Well, that's good." I love it :) Her sharp wit kept me laughing during this interview.
