Best part of the line - "BE somewhere else." Not "go", not "runaway", not "scamper with your tail between your legs" - "be." As in there is no amount of time too small for you to leave in. I shouldn't even be able to remember you were ever here.

But under the circumstances, The ship was bigger, stronger, faster, It's gun ports had just opened and the ship was not answering to any hails from the humans.

Under those conditions I think it may be justified to believe they were about to become hostile, not saying it was the right course of action but you can understand the captains position however wrong he may have been.

@sirAthrus For the story's sake, it had to happen. But if you think about it, there are many cultures on Earth that practiced this same kind of "respect" by keeping their weapons at the ready (Samurai code required it). The trigger-happy captain should never been in command of a first contact mission. Again, Earth's own history is an example. Who conquered Brazil: the trigger-happy Spaniards or the gift-giving "nice" Portuguese?

Still you can't bame the human captain who opened fire, from his point of view an alen warship was closing in on him and had just opened its gunports, I reckon i'd have opened fire in his place as well.

@sirAthrus True about Delenn. Many B5 fans forget that she was the one that gave the order to exterminate humankind after the mistaken "open gunports" fiasco lead to the death of Dukhat.

Delenn is one of the best characters, she is calm, polite and kind but if you ever make the mistake of pissing her off, she will utterly destroy you!

And it's true what she said, the only human captain ever to fight the Mimbari in battle, win and survive to tell the tale was now under her protection, if those captains were stupid enough to stay and fight her ships, they'd be dead before they could say:

"Well this wasn't the best idea I've ever had".
