George Edward "Butch" Ballard legendary Philly jazz drummer, celebrating his 89th birthday & performing @ Mozaic in the Frankford section of Philadelphia. Butch performed & recorded with the Duke Ellington, Count Basie & Cootie Williams big bands to name a few.
My only regret is the 'noise' from the crowd during his intimate 'finger' drum solo.
A George Manney film.

I posted this yesteday on my Facebook page: Today I was thinking if I ever get back to Philly I would look up the man who taught me to play drums, George "Butch" Ballard. I think of him now and then, especially on MLK day. When I googled him I was deeply saddened to learn he had passed away last October. Rest In Peace Butch. You were my first "life coach." I have not played drums for 30 years, but I carry your lessons with me always. Thanks to Marc Adler for emailing this video to me.

Amazing--particularly at 89! An interview with Mr. Ballard is featured in "The King of All, Sir Duke," a 2001 book by Peter Lavezzoli. Thanks for posting this clip.
