  • She was with Jim Gordon? Didn't he whack his mother years ago? If she stays in contact with him, I hope it's on the other side of a steel reinforced glass booth!

  • Rita no longer has any contact with Jim Gordon. Their friendship ended well before he murdered his mother. I believe these days he only sees anyone thru thick plexiglass.

  • I sure would like to see her performance with leon russell, bonnie bramlett, MAD DOGS AND ENGLISHMEN.

  • Rita's voice is richer and fuller than it use to be.

  • @madampeel Rita _could_ hold her notes at this concert and was not breathless on _other_ songs. This song was very stressful for her and she often left it out of her repertoire. I don't know the whole story behind it but the Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour was very tough on several of the performers.

I don't think Karen Carpenter had much idea what this song was about but she did have a wonderful voice.

  • She recorded this I think on a produced by Leon Russel LP,it was 1968 a great version,42 years later its not easy.

  • @judecreek2 Any truth that Layla was really George Harrison's wife?

  • @salinagrrrl69 No, Leon and Bonnie Bramlett wrote this song about Eric Clapton and the shabby way he treated his female fans, Leon, Rita, George Harrison and Eric Clapton were all members of Delaney and Bonnie and Friends.

  • Met her years ago at a gig. Nicest lady on two legs and incredibly beautiful, too. Karen Carpenter merely sings this like some little virgin whereas Rita sings it like a woman should.

  • Legend has it that Leon wrote this song from a story he heard about a girl that longed for a return visit from fellow Oklahoman The Guitar Man David Gates.

They knew each other - from the same generation - from the same place.

    Who knows?

  • Does anybody know where this song is from? Me thinks either a movie or play?

  • Ummm. I think there may be a problem, I think she forgot how to hold a mike.

  • Karen Carpenter is the best. Mad about her.

  • If you listen to Rita Coolidge's performance as a lead chorus girl in Joe Cocker's "Mad dogs and Englishmen" album fro 1970 abd earllier you will see she's in a class of her own !
