Rita no longer has any contact with Jim Gordon. Their friendship ended well before he murdered his mother. I believe these days he only sees anyone thru thick plexiglass.

@madampeel Rita _could_ hold her notes at this concert and was not breathless on _other_ songs. This song was very stressful for her and she often left it out of her repertoire. I don't know the whole story behind it but the Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour was very tough on several of the performers.

I don't think Karen Carpenter had much idea what this song was about but she did have a wonderful voice.

She recorded this I think on a produced by Leon Russel LP,it was 1968 a great version,42 years later its not easy.

Met her years ago at a gig. Nicest lady on two legs and incredibly beautiful, too. Karen Carpenter merely sings this like some little virgin whereas Rita sings it like a woman should.

If you listen to Rita Coolidge's performance as a lead chorus girl in Joe Cocker's "Mad dogs and Englishmen" album fro 1970 abd earllier you will see she's in a class of her own !
