Prescription Drugs: Killing More Than Pain; Sponsor: Multijurisdictional Counterdrug Task Force Training (MCTFT)/CADCA; Program Description: When America entered the new millennium, it entered a new era in the world of drug abuse. From the streets of the cities to the secluded family homes in the suburbs, prescription drug abuse is a problem that's spilling out of pill bottles and into the lives of millions all across our country. Back in 2000, about 1.5 million Americans abused prescription drugs. Two years later, that number quadrupled -- to more than six million. That's a 400% increase. Thousands of people die each year because they overdose on prescription medications. Many abusers think they're an FDA-approved high, while others become addicted after using powerful painkillers to treat legitimate pain. During this broadcast, learn how abusers are getting their drugs and how law enforcement, doctors, and pharmacists are fighting the problem. Hear from recovering addicts, treatment providers, doctors, robbery victims and more. Prescription drugs kill much more than pain. Program Objectives: Learn what prescription drugs are abused. Learn how doctors can better treat pain. See what would help pharmacists spot forged and altered prescriptions
See what tactics work for law enforcement
Find out what drug companies are doing
Know where to go for help. Prescription drugs, a category of psychotherapeutics that comprises prescription-type pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, and sedatives, are among the substances most commonly abused by young people in the United States. Prescription drugs are readily available and can easily be obtained by teenagers who abuse these drugs to experience a variety of desired effects. Often these young people are unaware of the serious health risks involved in abusing prescription drugs. Increasingly younger adolescents obtain prescription drugs from classmates, friends, and family members, or they steal the drugs from school medicine dispensaries and from people for whom the drug had been legitimately prescribed. Keywords: narcotics. Prescription drugs, which are widely available and easy to obtain, provide young people with an easily accessible, inexpensive means of altering their mental and physical state. Abusers may experience a heightened sense of pleasure, euphoria, drowsiness, increased energy, or various other effects depending upon the drugs they abuse. Young people who abuse prescription drugs put themselves at risk of experiencing dangerous side effects. Prescription drugs--when taken as prescribed by a physician--successfully treat a variety of mental or physical conditions. However, when abused, these drugs can alter the brain's activity and lead to debilitating or life-threatening health problems and result in physical or psychological dependence. Public domain video.

  • My 22 yr old son died Nov 4, 2009 from overdose of his ADD medicine for the past 10 yrs. Sean was on the Deans list in college before his life spun out of control. He dropped out of school. His psychiatrist recommended a treatment center in Houston (PaRC) who kicked Sean out for not buying in to his addiction. PaRC gave us a list of Halfway house. 7 days later Sean died in the back of his car in the parking lot. Sean took around 60 pills in 2 days. Ritalin an Adderall are addictive amphetamine.

  • Amen! I have been under treated for pain for years and suffer daily. Patients are not believed and labeled as drug seekers. I worked in a ER and my job was to flag anybody who received narcotics. They were all labeled. Some of these people were dying of AIDS, Cancer, and other diseases like broken bones, burns. They were labeled.

  • after that video i need some drugs!

  • they must know when to take it or not

This is normal with addiction. Before I cut down and put in some will power to quit, I was going to the local pharmacy to get the OTC codeine and paracetamol it was lower in dose, but I would do "Cold water extraction" to get all the codeine out of the pill ,and get my high

I've since stopped. If your girlfriend tells the doctor she needs him to support her cut down her prescription weekly, she WILL quit! I am already on my way to quitting

  • @clovisraider2

I was addicted to alcohol from the age of 15 to 26 , I gave up alcohol cold turkey, it was the hardest thing I ever had to do. Then one day after a headache my mother offered me some Codeine Phosphate (prescription Opiate) , I was hooked. I take around 140 pills a month, my prescriptions are monitored by my doctor. I was on 200 a month at first! so I've cut back 60 pills so far :D

and with my doctors support, he cuts the pills down every week to help me cut down and quit.

In pharmacies they should have boxes of "Placebo's" "Fake drugs" that resemble the ones the robbers want, that way , the thief robbing the pharmacy get's away with nothing at all :D

  • In the UK you can only register at ONE doctors surgery, you cannot go to different ones to get multiple prescriptions as you have an NHS (Health/Gov Number) and you are only allowed to register with one doctor.

If you want to transfer to another surgery you have to show ID and all your health notes go to the new surgery so there's no way you can go from doctor to doctor picking up prescriptions.

The US needs to implement this system

  • @crasy4lifes my girlfriend is addicted ta pills idk how ta help her n its frustrating i feel helpless cuz it pisses me off, i mean she always says she wants ta quit then she does good for a while n then takes huge steps bakk

  • "Most people, and almost all medical doctors, still believe that prescription drugs are based in good science, and that pharmaceutical companies offer them in good faith. The truth, however, is not difficult to uncover: Many top selling prescription drugs are useless; some even cause the disease for which they are prescribed." -- "The Great Prescription Drug Hoax" by By Owen R. Fonorow

  • I have stayed away from ANY pharma..i see how it ruins lives, creates addicts, pulls ppl into a life cycle of drug use. Several of my childhood friends have died so that their misery stopped. The fact IS, most of that misery was caused by the very drugs they were LEGALLY prescribed. It's a cycle of companies profit, government lobbyists & healthcare /medical profiteering.STAY AWAY!The products you put in your body can kill you.

  • i know how hard it can be. to stop using. im self a addict. i have od over 4 times and 3 times were i close to die. people thats gets a chance to quit. than take that chance. or you will regret it forever.
