Roch,Poof,DigRat,Hangnout,Rain and MedicineMan bring in the New Year in Red River Gorge. This loop, but a small sampling of the Red River Gorge, took place from 12/20 to 1/1/12 in Kentucky's Daniel Boone Nat.Forest. Last year I set as goals adding more AT miles, hiking in the Savage Gulf, the Big South Fork, and in Red River Gorge-I made my goal just in the nick of time celebrating New Years (though I was asleep by 7:30pm) in the gorge. This gorge was very similar in topography to the Big South Fork and the Sipsey Wilderness in Alabama.
Hike wise the tread was surprisingly nice. Rating this compared to an AT section in southern Maine the Red River Gorge gets a 1, the trails in the Smokies in comparison get a 2. The ups/downs are steep and often slick/wet but they are over with quickly. The scenery here magnificient and the bluff shelters only surpassed by those in the Sipsey with their waterfall components.
The historical aspect is notable, knowing that 'Sheltowee-the Shawnee name for D.Boone while he was held captive) actually stayed in some of the bluff shelters sene.
All in all another wonderful trip with fellow explorers from hammockforums.net
Definitely put Red River Gorge on your score list--it was a New Years Eve we'll never forget

It seems some of your crew had a exterior back pack frame. Any clue as to what they were and how long they had them? Thanks...Dash Riprock
