What Effect Does Diabetes Have On Your Teeth?
Only 2/3 of the people in the United States with diabetes have been diagnosed. So approximately 8 million people don't know they are diabetics.
People with diabetes get mouth infections and gum disease (periodontal disease) more frequently than people without diabetes. In addition, the mouth infections are often much more serious when a person has diabetes. This is even more of a problem when a person with diabetes has uncontrolled blood sugar levels.
Why Is Diabetes Such A Problem?
It's because diabetes decreases the infection fighting ability of the body. With a decreased ability to fight infections, the gums have a higher risk of gingivitis. Gingivitis is also known as gum disease. If the gum disease is not treated, it leads to tooth loss and entire body infections.
Ways People Who Are Diabetics Can Protect Their Teeth:
* See your dentist on a regular basis and alert him/her of any changes in health status and medications.
* Inform your dentist of any sores, swellings, areas of redness and any painful areas in your mouth.
* Eat a normal meal prior to the dental appointment, take all diabetic medications on schedule, bring your blood sugar monitoring device and inform the dentist if symptoms associated with low blood sugar are felt
